Dyson V12 Detect Slim

Wirecutter praises the Dyson V12 Detect Slim as an impressively capable cordless stick vacuum that strikes a strong balance between performance, usability, and innovative features. The review highlights its standout attributes, such as the laser headlight that reveals hidden debris, an intuitive LCD screen with a particle counter and runtime display, and a more comfortable on/off button replacing Dyson’s traditional trigger switch. Tested extensively on various floor types and challenging messes—including pet fur and litter—the V12 delivers superior suction compared to older models like the V8 and performs nearly on par with the pricier V15. While the small dustbin requires frequent emptying, its new point-and-shoot mechanism makes this less of a hassle. The V12’s lighter, balanced design and versatile attachments add to its appeal. However, the review tempers enthusiasm by noting inherent cordless vacuum trade-offs, such as limited battery life and the fact that corded canister vacuums still outperform in suction and longevity. Overall, the V12 is recommended as a near-ideal stick vacuum for quick, precise cleaning tasks.

RTINGS highlights the Dyson V12 Detect Slim as a highly portable, mid-range cordless stick vacuum that excels on bare floors and offers solid performance on low-pile carpets and pet hair removal. Praised for its lightweight design, decent battery life, and innovative features like automatic suction adjustment and a real-time particle counter, it is easy to maneuver and maintain. However, the review notes some drawbacks, including a small dirt compartment requiring frequent emptying and a somewhat flimsy plastic body. While effective on most surfaces, the vacuum struggles with high-pile carpets due to the lack of brushroll height adjustment and has limited stain and liquid spill cleaning capabilities. Its allergen-sealed construction and removable brushrolls add value for pet owners. Overall, the Dyson V12 Detect Slim offers a balanced mix of portability, smart features, and cleaning power, making it a versatile choice for everyday household use, though with some compromises in durability and capacity.

David Ludlow from Trusted Reviews highlights the Dyson V12 Detect Slim Absolute as a standout lightweight cordless vacuum that successfully condenses much of the advanced technology from the larger V15 model into a more compact and user-friendly design. Praising its clever automatic power adjustment, laser-illuminated cleaner head, and informative LCD display, Ludlow emphasizes the vacuum’s excellent cleaning performance across carpets and hard floors, especially for smaller homes or as a secondary cleaner. The review notes the vacuum’s impressive suction power on boost mode and a practical battery life of around 25 minutes in automatic mode, sufficient for typical cleaning tasks. While the selection of tools and anti-tangle features receive positive mention, the reviewer critiques the placement of the power button as somewhat awkward, suggesting a more ergonomic design would improve usability. Overall, Ludlow’s tone is measured but appreciative, recognizing the V12 Detect Slim as a highly capable, innovative vacuum that balances performance and portability, albeit at a premium price point.

Andy Shaw from Expert Reviews highlights the Dyson V12 Detect Slim Absolute as a lighter, more affordable alternative to the V15 Detect, retaining many of its advanced features such as the laser dust detection and particle counting display. Praised for its excellent cleaning performance—achieving near-perfect pickup of Cheerios and flour on both hard floors and carpet—the V12 impresses despite having lower suction power and a smaller dust bin than the V15. The review notes the convenience of a removable battery and a redesigned on/off button replacing the traditional trigger, which may benefit users who prefer not to maintain a constant grip. However, some drawbacks include the need to swap floor heads when changing surfaces, a relatively small bin that fills quickly in larger homes, and a Boost mode battery life shorter than ideal. Overall, the V12 Detect Slim offers strong cleaning ability and portability at a better value, though it doesn’t fully replace the V15 for those needing longer runtime or larger capacity.

Brenda Stolyar from WIRED highlights the Dyson V12 Detect Slim as a highly effective, compact cordless vacuum ideal for small apartments with hard floors and occasional rugs. She expresses genuine enthusiasm for its standout features, especially the innovative green laser detection that reveals invisible dust and the convenient single power button, which enhances usability. The vacuum’s lightweight design, versatile cleaning heads, and real-time particle tracking on the LCD screen contribute to a satisfying cleaning experience that reduces the need for frequent vacuuming. While the $650 price tag initially caused hesitation, the reviewer ultimately considers it a worthwhile investment for its performance and thoughtful design. Some minor drawbacks include the small dustbin requiring frequent emptying, the peeling rubber coating when not stored on the wall mount, and a moderate 30-minute runtime on Auto mode. Overall, Stolyar finds the V12 Detect Slim a smart choice for urban dwellers seeking precision cleaning and appreciates its blend of technology and practicality.

Debbie Wolfe from BobVila.com highlights the Dyson V12 Detect Slim as a sleek, powerful, and lightweight cordless vacuum packed with advanced features like a laser light for revealing hidden dust, an adaptive suction sensor, and a detailed LCD screen displaying filtration and battery data. She appreciates its strong cleaning performance on various floor types and pet hair, along with easy assembly and versatile accessories. However, Wolfe notes some design quirks, such as the awkward front power button placement and the limited dustbin capacity, which make it less suitable for larger homes or heavy pet owners. Battery life is solid but recharging takes time, limiting frequent use in bigger spaces. While the V12 excels as a stylish, efficient vacuum for small to medium homes and quick cleanups, Wolfe suggests alternatives for those with extensive cleaning needs. Overall, she rates it 7/10, praising its innovation and usability but cautioning about its practical limitations.

Leah Stodart from Mashable highlights the Dyson V12 Detect Slim as a standout stick vacuum that combines practical innovation with everyday usability. She praises its unique laser feature, which reveals microscopic debris invisible to the naked eye, transforming routine cleaning into a surprisingly satisfying and thorough experience. The vacuum’s lightweight design, nimble cleaning heads, and digital display add to its appeal, making it easy and even enjoyable to use daily. While the V12 Detect Slim offers less suction power, shorter battery life, and a smaller dustbin compared to higher-end Dyson models, these trade-offs contribute to its agility and affordability, positioning it as a great value for most households. Stodart also emphasizes the vacuum’s durability, noting consistent performance over three years of frequent use. Minor drawbacks include occasional motor head stoppages on certain rugs and the need for regular filter maintenance. Overall, she enthusiastically recommends the V12 Detect Slim for its balance of innovation, effectiveness, and user-friendly design.

Daniel Bennett from BBC Science Focus praises the Dyson V12 Detect Slim Extra as a lightweight, powerful, and versatile vacuum that transforms cleaning into an engaging experience thanks to its unique illuminated laser cleaning head. He highlights the device’s excellent suction, ergonomic design, and wide range of adaptable accessories that handle various debris types with ease. The reviewer appreciates the thoughtful features like the particle-counting display and improved power button placement, which enhance usability. However, he notes practical limitations for larger homes, such as the small dustbin capacity and relatively short battery life—around 10 minutes on full power—which may require frequent emptying and recharging. Despite these trade-offs, Bennett finds the vacuum’s performance impressive for its size and ideal for smaller living spaces. The laser-guided cleaning, which gamifies the chore, stands out as a unique insight, ultimately leading to noticeably cleaner floors and making the product a compelling choice for those prioritizing convenience and innovation.
